August 2001

We are now in crunch mode as Randy and the boys go back to school at the end of this month. Our contractor quit on us at the beginning of the month so we are pretty much on our own. We do have a crew that comes in on the weekends, so we are hopeful that we can button this up before the end of the month.

Here's the kitchen wall, as you can tell, the contractor didn't bother using his level with the studs, so we will have to go back in and straighten the "wavy" studs, its a wall.

This wall will have both base and wall cabinets and the frig will be on this wall too.

The rafters for the living room are up and they are 38 feet in length, not a small feat to put up. The boys spent days staining these rafters and the 2x8 TNG boards that make up our exposed ceiling. I think they will be happy to never see stain again. Ooops, forgot to tell them that the 135 planks they did only represents about 1/3 of what will be needed.

Team work. Here they are just going to town putting up the 2x8 TNG. I know the boys heart sank to see how fast they were going through the pile. Each plank used meant they were in for more staining. But the exposed ceiling looks beautiful. It gives the house a very warm feeling with all that wood exposed.

This is a view of the "other" kitchen wall. This one has an opening that looks out over the living room. The ceiling from the living room is picked up here in the kitchen and continues up to the ridge.

Here's a better look at what the ceiling will look like throughout the house. This is our bedroom and its amazing how the room changes in feel with the ceiling on.

You are now looking into my closet. I hadn't thought about it, but the ceiling in there is quite high, so now I have all this great storage space above too. Also, notice that we did get some of the windows installed.

"Junior", pictured here, framed out our fireplace and chimney for us. The opening looks huge, but Randy tells me that actually our current fireplace is bigger than the new one. Regardless, it will look great and its added a new dimension to the room.

This view probably takes a bit of explaining. The opening is for the front door which stands 8 ft. tall and 6 ft. wide. So this view is looking straight down the entry way into the living room and the French doors on the back wall.

George is on the ridge and closing up the ceiling. The opening below him is for a transom window that lets in great deal of sunlight in the afternoons.

Well, things moved along especially well towards the end of the month. Unfortunately, our digital camera stopped working so we could not update pictorially. What was accomplished was the buttoning up of the house, ready for the fire sprinkler contractor to come in and start that part of the process. Once that is complete, we can finish the roof and hopefully get the roofing contractor to come in and complete that. Our goal is to of course get the house ready for the rainy season.

Randy and the boys returned to school at the end of the month, but we are still diligently working weekends and really anytime we can squeeze in.

Here are the beams and rafters being put in place for the breakfast nook.
