In the beginning . . . Jan. 2002

December 2000
Wednesday morning, the 12 of December started out with heavy showers and I was convinced that we would not be starting our septic dig that day. We had already been delayed a day because the operator was sick, and I was sure that it just wasn't going to happen. To my surprise, they showed up and the sun even cooperated by showing itself for the rest of the day. They had a huge crane "thingy" set up as they had to dig three pits each 55 feet deep.

These guys work quick! Randy and I returned the next morning and they already had the 2500 gallon concrete tank in the ground. Later that afternoon, it had been inspected and covered over. So now we had septic on the property. Step one completed. Usually, the septic is done much later on the job, but with the layout of our property, we needed to get the heavy equipment in first.

The added benefit of having the septic done was that we could but a toilet in the outdoor shed we had up on the property already. In doing this, we have saved a lot of money in not having to rent those ugly and smelly port-a-potties. |

The next debate was whether or not to take the chance and go ahead with
the excavation of the site. On the one hand, we would have a step up on
the project, on the other hand it could turn out to be a very wet winter
and we could have a muddy mess on our hands.
We decided to take the chance and had the excavation contractor start immediately. One of the determining factors was that Randy had most of December and all of January off. He could be onsite everyday at this very critical stage of the process. As Ken, our contractor says, "we were very lucky" and it turned out to be a beautiful December, dry and warm.

Ken moved in all the neat equipment. He even let Randy operate it, which I guess is every guys dream; to "play" with heavy equipment.

|
December ended with much of the excavation work complete and the next step was to call in the concrete guys and get the forms built for the footings and retaining walls. It was a great start, and 2000 ended with us very pleased that we had taken the plunge.
