Enhanced Index to Linn County, Missouri Nineteenth Century Courthouse Deed Book A, 1837-1845 (compiled by Neil Smith)

Abstract

Land deed records in county courthouse records provide a wealth of information about our ancestors. Many, if not most, of our early mid-west ancestors were farmers whose daily lives did not generate much of a written record except for their real estate transactions. Every land purchase and sale can assist in determining ancestor locations, area arrival and departure dates, additional given and middle names, spouse names, and possible other relative's names.

This publication is a transcription of the people and dates for all deeds recorded in Linn County, Missouri, Deed Book A which covers the recording time period from March 1837 through December 1845. It is more than a mere rewrite of the original grantor/grantee indexes for I have included every person's name present in the actual recording, along with a complete index to these names. In addition, I have provided the deed information sorted in five different ways; grantor and transaction date, grantee and transaction date, transaction date and grantor, recording date and grantor, and Deed Book page number.

In addition, I have rewritten the sheriff's sales to list the name of the owner, instead of the sheriff's name, whose property was being sold for non-payment of taxes or for settlement of a debt. I have also listed the actual grantor/grantee names in those transactions handled by someone with a Power of Attorney or acting as an administrator.

I have separated Missouri state and county officials into a table and indexed their names as well.

Lastly, I have corrected several names that were misinterpreted/misspelled in the county indexes. For names which I felt were misspelled, I have provided an index entry for the alternate spelling.

My index has more than 1400 entries pointing to names in Deed Book A. As a result of my research on this document, I estimate the actual deed recordings mention two to four times as many unique individuals as recorded in the county grantor and grantee indexes. With my enhanced document index, you should be able to find many more of your ancestors than listed in the county indexes, with a higher incidence of those actually buying or selling their property.
