Living in Monterey, we came across an interesting and colorful advertising collectible from a long defunct Cannery Row packer. This is a paper label for California SQUID, 15 oz. can, packed by Portola Packing Company of Monterey, California. The company was in business from 1916 to 1973, and did packing in the Hovden Cannery at 886 Cannery Row, made famous by John Steinbeck in his book of the same name. Most of the area seafood canning business dried up in the 1950s and today Cannery Row houses retail businesses, restaurants and the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. The Aquarium now occupies the old Hovden Cannery, having acquired the building in 1978. These labels are a beautiful bright red with gold letters and black trim. These are vintage original and not a reproduction. These labels are believed to be from the 1930s. Labeling on the front identifies "Portola Supreme Quality California Squid" in both English and Spanish. Copyright U.S.A. K. Hovden Co. 1916.
Labels measure about 9-1/2" by 4-1/8" (245 mm x 105 mm). If you are an advertising collector, you will absolutely love these labels. Condition:
