Sepia-tone Real Photo Postcard of Main Street at Depot Street in Camp Dodge, Iowa in Polk County, taken September 28, 1918, during the time of the Great War. Great detail of the town outside the camp, showing vintage antique autos on dirt streets, and men in uniform warlking the wooden sidewalks. On April 6, 1917 the United States declared war on the imperial German Government. The same day Camp Dodge, previously a camp and training grounds for the Iowa National Guard located just 10 miles north of Des Moines, was chosen as the 13th National Cantonment for military training. Construction started, June 19, 1917 and within four months, infrastructure, buildings, and water systems were built to accommodate more than 40,000 troops training at Camp Dodge. The first inducted men reported September, 1917 and the 88th Division was prepared for overseas assignments. Front view of the Knights of Columbus Hall "EVERYBODY WELCOME" on the right in the inset. Further down the street is the YMCA Hostess House and the Liberty Theatre.
