RPPC SS Northwestern ice encrusted Juneau,AK 1916

Vintage Real Photo PostCard featuring the snow-crusted steamship ship the SS Northwestern around Juneau, Alaska in 1916. This ship ferried sightseers from Seward dock in Juneau to the Columbia glacier and iceberg fields. Titled on lower left:

"NORTHWESTERN"
Juneau - Alaska - Jan. 22-1916
Handwritten note in ink in upper right - "Hows this for cold?"

(SS Northwestern ran aground near Cape Mudge in 1927, and again in 1933 when it struck the reef off Sentinel Island north of Juneau. The Nortwestern was repaired and returned to service.)

Hand written note on reverse mailed to Wenatchee, WA,and date cannot be read but may be in 1950s. Card has AZO stampbox.

Condition:
  • Good condition with minor age yellowing
  • Section in lower left 1/2 inch by about 2 inches was apparently broken off and repaired with tape on reverse side (difficult to notice from front)
  • Corners and edges are generally sharp
