Clear, Glossy Real Photo Postcard showing the outside deck and garden of the Historic Landmark Central City Opera House on Eureka Street. With the gold boom in 1859, this area in Gilpin County was known as the "Richest Square Mile on Earth" and was the financial and cultural center of the state. The town and area went from the boom years around 1860 of about 30,000 population to the few thousand at most in this card's era, around 1940. The Central City Opera House became a center of American opera. Built in 1878 and featuring early famous performers such as Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, it was restored in the midst of the Great Depression. Since 1932 it has hosted an annual summer festival. Central City Opera has featured established stars and helped launch the careers of several significant American artists. The nation's fifth-oldest opera company has also long championed works by American composers, from Douglas Moore to Mark Adamo. Across the street is the Williams Stable building. Once the site of a gold rush, Central City has become a gambling center and a boom town for opera lovers. Titled on lower right in the celluloid OPERA HOUSE Inset shows details of the Victorian stairway and deck.
