Sepia-tone Real Photo Postcard of a famous, quaint street in Santa Barbara, California built in the 1920s in the Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style. El Paseo includes a collection of shops and restaurants offering outdoor dining, amid an area designed for artist studios. Historic Casa de la Guerra, an early day residence mentioned in Richard Henry Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast," is encompassed in the enclave.Bernhard Hoffmann purchased the Casa de la Guerra and commissioned the construction of El Paseo around it, including the famed Street of Spain off of De la Guerra Street. He helped found the Architectural Board of Review and the City Planning Commission and was a prime mover in the passage of the city's first building codes shortly before the earthquake of June 1925 struck. This photo is believed to be taken before the 1925 earthquake. A vintage auto is seen in the inset below, in the courtyard at the end of the street.
Caption on the card in the celluloid reads "A Street of Spain Santa Barbara, Calif." and has a photographer's mark 43. No writing or address on reverse and card not posted. Stampbox is an unusual "SSSS" and dates the stock in the 1920s. An interesting addition to your California historical collection. Condition:
