When I first heard of the disastrous tsunami the numbers of fatalities were too high for me to know how to relate to them. It was overwhelming. Then I read of Peter Shah's foundation, Global Uplift. The article practically jumped off the page at me for several reasons: Peter is my accountant (a man I highly respect) and the estimated cost of rebuilding a house ($400) seemed like something tangible I could do, so I bought one. Later when Peter was doing our taxes we got to talking more about the project and it seemed to me that I just had to go and help on-site. My background is psychology, not construction, but I am a handyman at home and have built some rooms and some plumbing on my house. Next thing I knew, I was signed up to go. I am filled with excitement and anxiety. We've done all the research we can on the area, the language, health issues (prevention and treatment), construction, snakes, etc. Now all we have to do is to go and make a difference.
